the end of all leaves
Every time you see the leaves fall off
you say "that is the end of all leaves"
and I believe you
as winter comes
and the snow follows
and the sun grows distant
gives me that severe glance.
But I am older now
and I know better
there will be more leaves
and flowers too!
more shade
more fruit then I could ever need.
All of those leaves
do not care if we believe in them or not.
they will return regardless
all we do is stay around
to see them
and let them canopy us
in that future season.

comfort food
sometimes, yes.
there is a taste
to comfort
and it goes deep
like oak roots
down to the bottom
of your being
and you smile
with a certain
memory pleasure
exponentially delightful
layered sweetly over
every positive experience
that has every happened
from childhood
to now.
every aromatic
recess in spring
every touch
and look and brush
of clothes off skin
every hidden and
forbidden pleasantry
that would turn your cheeks crimson
if people knew
every beautiful and
exhausting happiness
of the clear wide expanse of life
can be metaphored in here.
folded in, frapped and infused-
this is the translucent
secret space
to which you return.
you center back
with a safe
inward sigh:
comfort food.

Grand
Jumping jacks and fireworks
I want this to be big
No, no
Grand!
But I am silly
And un-fancy
To impatient for sonnets
Structure and syntax
And my chance at rhyme
Is at best,
a cranial echo
And textbook
Obsession
But oh hell
For all my simple
And fall short
I have got something
That thing, I assure you
The heart
Of Sylvia
And Emily too
The kill-me-kind
Achilles Soul
That gets another day
Of breathing
By the spouting of
Albeit silly and un-fancy
Words
And sometimes
If I get a reprieve
Yes, yes
Grand!
